Joo Sang Wook has chosen his comeback drama after Sly and Single Again – a makeover drama called Birth of a Beauty. That’s a working title, mind you. I really hope it’s not the real title…
The drama will follow a woman who changes her life completely through dieting. Um… Okay… Immediately I’m reminded of the film ‘200 Pounds Beauty’, which starred Kim Ah Joong and Joo Jin Mo. I don’t know if this particular woman – who has yet been cast – will become a famous singer after dieting, but Joo Sang Wook will certainly be the pretty man to look at.
I find it a bit disconcerting that the drama might end up sending the message that a woman has to change how she looks just to change her life for the better. While ‘200 Pounds Beauty’ did manage to say that one has to accept one’s inner beauty and past to really be a better person, at the end of the day Kim Ah Joong’s character really only became popular because of the plastic surgery she got. Dieting might be a little better than plastic surgery (in that it’s not a permanent and radical fix to one’s appearance), but it could still give off a harmful message depending on how it’s presented.
Whatever happened to having a female lead like Kim Sam Soon who had a normal body and was lovable in her own right without ever changing?
Directed by Lee Chang Min (Giant, Midas) and written by Yoon Young Mi (One Well-Raised Daughter, Bride of the Sun), the drama will air in November following Hwang Jung Eum‘s drama Endless Love on SBS every Saturday and Sunday.
